椰子蟹是一種寄居蟹，能長到1米長，不僅是最大的陸生蟹類，也是最大的陸生節肢動物。體型碩大，體重最高可達8KG，椰子蟹的外殼堅硬，有兩只強壯有力的巨螯，是爬樹高手，尤其善於攀爬筆直的椰子樹，因為它們可以用強壯的雙螯剝開堅硬的椰子殼，以吃其中的椰子果肉而得名。
椰子蟹幼體在繁殖初期與其它陸寄居蟹相似，從大眼幼體成長到幼蟹時也身背螺殼，將腹部保護在其中，直到腹部發育甲殼硬化之後才脫離螺殼。
