鴨跖草科紫露草屬植物的多年生草本植物，莖多分枝，帶肉質，紫紅色，節上常生須根，上部近於直立；葉互生，披針形，先端漸尖，基部抱莖而成鞘，鞘口有白色長睫毛，上面暗綠色，邊緣綠紫色，下面紫紅色；花色為粉白色；蒴果圓形；種子呈三棱狀半圓形，淡棕色；花期6~10月。
紫竹梅原產於墨西哥，現中國各地均有引種栽培。紫竹梅性喜日照充足，忌暴曬，亦耐半陰，且生性強健，耐寒，在華東地區可露地越冬，對土壤要求不嚴，對幹旱有較強的適應能力，但適宜肥沃、濕潤的壤土。紫竹梅繁殖方式為扡插繁殖。
