紅松尾頂葉呈現紅色，但是下半部分常常呈現棕綠色，10-13枚葉片輪生，葉片呈長針形，但葉質較為柔軟。常常在頂部開花，花絮為穗狀花絮，淡桃紅色花。
紅松尾水中草對於水質變化適應能力較差，如果水質波動或者PH產生劇烈變化，紅松尾極易生長不良。紅松尾喜歡新水，經常換水，對於它的生長發育有幫助，但是應該避免PH產生過大的變化。
