紅衣夢幻旗為典型的紅色艷麗形魚類，其最大長度約3厘米或稍大，為體型比較小的旗燈魚類。紅衣夢幻旗通體呈紅色，肌肉透明，腹腔處為反光物質包裹，但同樣覆蓋紅色，視覺上呈現金色。腹部側面有一個明顯的大黑點，雄魚背鰭上有黑斑，雌魚則有白色的鰭尖。紅衣夢幻旗雖然為整體的紅色魚，但顏色狀況差距較大，有時僅僅是各魚鰭紅色，而身體僅呈淺淡的透明淺紅色，有時又會有濃烈的通身紅色出現。
