牻牛兒苗科天竺葵屬的草本植物，其莖直立，基部木質化，具魚腥味；葉互生，分為托葉寬三角形或卵形和葉圓形或腎形基部心形；花梗是被柔毛和腺毛，萼片窄披針形，花瓣紅、橙紅、粉紅或白色，為寬倒卵形；果為被柔毛。花期5—7月，果期6—9月。天竺是中國對印度的古稱，「天竺葵」可能是因當時知道它來自溫暖之國而得名，意為「印度的葵花」，雅稱就成了「天竺葵」。
天竺葵的葉面較為脆弱，每到新環境會換新葉片，葉片枯萎是正常現象，2-3天內會長出新芽開始換葉
