泥炭土的優點有很多，配製基質時摻雜泥炭土可改良土壤，有效緩解板結、硬化情況，提高透氣透水性。而且泥炭土含有豐富的養分，能增加土壤的營養成分，提高肥沃度。
泥炭土適合用來養花和多肉，但是最好不要單獨使用，要摻雜其他基質混合才行。一般都是和珍珠岩、蛭石等混合配製土壤的，這樣配出來的土壤更鬆軟、透氣，也有一定肥力，適合大部分花卉植物生長。
