刺鰍原產於印度以東的東南亞之廣大區域，臺灣亦產，分佈於臺北桃園一帶。 本魚的體形極長，頗似鰻魚，又因眼前下方有小棘，背鰭前部亦有許多分離的小棘。 咖啡色的身體上，有3 - 10個不規則的圓形黑斑，口小吻長，且可自由扭轉，用此口吻在砂中挖采食物。
