紅腹海龍是淡水海龍中最漂亮一種，狀態好時腹部呈現火紅的顏色，喜歡用細細的尾巴纏繞在水草上固定自己，然後身體前傾觀察周圍狀況。眼眶很大，有點像變色龍蜥蜴的眼睛，也可以兩隻眼睛轉動看向不同的方向。剛開始可以喂活的成體豐年蝦，比較容易訓練接受冷凍豐年蝦或冷凍紅蟲。
