鵝掌柴是熱帶、亞熱帶地區常綠闊葉林常見的植物，原產大洋洲、中國廣東、福建、以及南美洲等地的亞熱帶雨林，日本、越南、印度也有分布，現廣泛種植於世界各地。
鹅掌柴喜湿怕干。在空气湿度大、土壤水分充足的情况下，茎叶生长茂盛。但水分太多，造成渍水，会引起烂根。如盆土缺水或长期时湿时干，会发生落叶现象。鹅掌柴对临时干旱和干燥空气有一定适应能力。喜半蔭的環境條件，不甚耐寒，宜濕潤的含有豐富腐殖質的微酸性土壤。
