沼澤側頸龜分佈於撒哈拉沙漠以南非洲全境，馬達加斯加島，阿拉伯半島南端。生活於廣闊的湖泊、河川和沼澤地帶。
沼澤側頸龜對於環境和食物的變化耐受力很高，群居性強。
沼澤側頸龜對低溫的承受力高於一般熱帶龜類，當受到驚嚇時它們也會和麝香龜類一樣排出麝香味的液體。
