桂林薄鰍個頭雖小，能耐卻很大，對環境的適應能力特別強，在一些含氧量低、水質較差的惡劣環境中仍能生存，甚至在乾旱季節，水源涸竭的情況下，它能鑽入泥中照樣不死。因為泥鰍有特殊的呼吸方式，它除了和其他魚一樣能用鰓吸收水中的氧氣外，還能通過腸呼吸直接從空氣中得到氧氣。平時泥鰍生活在水底的淤泥裡，當水中的含氧量減少時，它們便紛紛上浮，不時將頭伸出水面，用嘴巴吞吸空氣。
