東方墨頭魚體背深黑色，腹部灰白，各鰭灰黑色，略帶橙色，幼魚橙色較顯著，體側每個鱗片後部均有一黑斑，故形成體兩側各有6條黑色平行的條紋。東方墨頭魚經常棲息於江河、山澗水流湍急的環境中，以其碟狀吸盤吸附於岩石上，營底棲生活。
