黑帝王燈體形粗壯，體色富於變化，整體呈鉛灰色，體軸中央為雙排色帶：其中下方為一條醒目的粗黑帶，黑色一直延續到尾鰭正中央；上方則混雜了藍紫色或藍色的彩色色帶。帝王燈魚雖然為脂鯉類，但沒有脂鰭（既背部後方的第二個小鰭），尾柄部分長，故臀鰭十分延長。帝王燈魚的尾鰭為三叉形，中央有一條拉長的尾絲，顏色與體軸黑帶相連，同為黑色。
