頭尾燈魚體型呈側扁，頭鈍圓，呈紡錘形，仔細觀察頭尾燈的各個鰭都是透明的。臀鰭相對較長，前段三角形，然後向後變短。身體兩側中部各有一條鈷藍色的條紋，非常好看，當然，最顯著的看點還是在眼緣處和尾柄部位有一大塊金色的斑點，尾柄處的金色斑點下方是一個深黑色的色斑，將金色的斑點襯托的更加顯著，如果配上燈光的折射，可以看到金屬的光亮。遊動時由於光線和視角的原因，頭部和尾部的兩個斑點時隱時現，在草缸中猶如密林之中的螢火蟲，又如汽車頭尾的燈光。
