縮小體型的球體青鳉，在人們的印象中是比較偏向可愛型，而且是人氣非常好的品種，朝向水草觀賞，常常能看到它們可愛的遊姿，分布於中國及日本等國境內水域。性情溫和，喜歡群遊。食性比較雜，可以食豐年蝦、水蚤等活餌，也會食缸內的水藻。各個品種以色彩、體形等進行區分，體形上有普通體形、光體形、球體、短體形、無背鰭等；色彩上分為純色系及錦系。 生長速度較快，常溫條件下，3個月左右大的觀背青鳉就已性成熟，具備繁殖能力。
