大河甜甜圈的幼龜背甲以綠色為主，成體慢慢變為橄欖色、棕色或暗黃色，上面佈滿斑駁的橙色和黃色橢圓形或螺旋狀的同心圓，圓心形成暗色斑點，構成錯綜而多變的花紋。
大河甜甜圈的腹甲為黃色，沿盾甲接縫處有深色花紋。皮膚為棕色或橄欖色，頭頸部、四肢與尾部有著明亮的黃色條紋裝飾，隨著年齡的增長，體色會逐漸顯現出豔麗的紅色，十分美麗。
李奧格蘭德河這條河流的名字經常被人們翻譯成“大河”，再加上偽龜屬部分龜種被人們俗稱為“甜甜圈龜”的習慣，所以產自奧格蘭德河的偽龜屬被叫做大河甜甜圈。
