黑鰭鳈，體背及體側灰暗，間雜有黑色和棕黃色的斑紋，腹部白色。體側中軸沿側線自鰓蓋後上角至尾鰭基具黑色縱紋，鰓蓋後緣、峽部、胸部均呈桔黃色，鰓孔後緣的體前部具有一條深黑色的垂直條紋，背鰭、尾鰭灰黑色較深，其他各紹呈黑色。生殖期間雄魚體側斑紋黑色更明顯，一般呈濃黑色，頰部、頜部及胸鰭基部處為橙紅色，尾鰭呈黃色，吻部具有多數白色珠星;雌魚產卵管稍延長，體色不及雄魚鮮豔。
