南美畫眉短鯛的體型相對較小，成魚體長通常在12-15cm之間。幼魚體色為銀白色，具有一條醒目的黑色斜紋，從眼部橫穿而過，這也是它們得名 “畫眉”的原因。
它們喜歡在水流緩慢甚至靜滯的環境中活動，主要以其他小型魚類、昆蟲和植物為食，是雜食性魚類。
