原產美國南部、墨西哥北部、東北和中部地區。植株呈扁圓球形，直徑5～8cm，球體由6～10條淺溝而分成6～10個扁圓棱。無刺，刺座上有白色星狀綿毛。花著生於球頂部，漏鬥形，黃色或紅色，花心紅色。
星兜喜幹燥環境，耐旱，喜陽光充足溫差大，排水良好的富含石灰質的砂質土壤。生長季節要經常澆水。成年植株5～6年換一次盆即可。冬季溫度低於7℃的時候，夜間可放置室內保暖。
