飼養需要高溶氧和大缸，缸底鋪深色細沙，此魚喜歡跳躍，所以魚缸須加蓋，同時該魚為溪流魚類，在有條件的情況下使用造浪系統，營造其野外生存環境。其習性以及形態與寬鰭鱲比較相似。
長鰭鱲通常在生長到6個月左右由於食欲旺盛、生長較快，會開始變色。而成年的長鰭鱲魚在成熟後，體長可達20厘米以上，發色會呈現寶藍色等鮮艷色彩。在適宜的環境中，如水質清澈、水流適度、有適度的造景和背景色（偏深色）等，長鰭鱲的發色效果會更好。同時，飼養過程中需要提供充足的食物和營養，以支持其生長和發色。
