大牛毛氈是多年生雙子葉植物，屬於挺水性水草。通常生長在水邊，水上草與水中草形態接近，但水上草看起來更加粗壯挺拔，水中草則相當柔軟。外觀類似大莎草，有短根莖，杆密集叢生，直立或微彎。水上葉通常不超過25釐米長，但水中葉可長達60釐米，適合當背景草。通常是走莖繁殖，喜歡肥沃的水草泥，在中等照度及軟水中生長最好，如果成群栽植時，需要預留發展的空間，太過密集會導致生長不良。
種植方法：
- 將魚缸底部鋪滿水草泥將種子平均撒在缸中
- 將種子平均撒在缸中
- 噴水，使基質保持濕潤
- 溫度儘量保持在24-30度
- 1星期左右發芽後，再沿缸壁緩慢加水
