腹部突出，形如斧頭。胸鰭大，如翅膀，俗稱燕子。 沒有豔麗的色彩。性格溫順，有群遊性，喜歡在水的上層活動，跳躍能力強。是唯一會飛行的魚，可以躍出水面，飛行數米遠的距離，以躲避敵害的追捕。它們與飛魚的滑翔不同，在飛行的時候象蜂鳥一樣，快速地擺動胸鰭。
噴點燕子屬於群遊性魚，建議飼養5條以上
