川西鳈成體背部呈青灰色，體側為淺青灰色，後半部顏色較淺，腹部灰白色。各鰭淺灰黑色。生殖期間體色較鮮豔，常呈桔紅色，背部較深，腹部較淺，頭兩測的鰓蓋和頰部均呈桔黃色。沿側線具1條深黑色縱條紋，背鰭以後顏色較深，體側有許多不規則的黑斑，緊靠鰓蓋後緣的體側有一黑色垂直條紋。
Tip:在適應新環境期間可能會有褪色現象，體色會變淡，依環境條件的不同會直接影響體色恢復的時間。
