短體副鰍屬底棲性魚類，喜生活在江河或溪流的底層。體背部和側上部為褐色帶淺灰色，體側有許多較寬的深褐色橫條紋，腹部黃褐色。背鰭前緣和外緣具鮮紅色邊緣，其中部有一列黑色斑紋。
