一般成熟體長在25～35厘米之間，最大可達50厘米。大口黑鱸身體呈紡錘形，側扁，背肉稍厚，橫切面為橢圓形。身體背部為青灰色，腹部灰白色。從吻端至尾鰭基部有排列成帶狀的黑斑。主要棲息在水溫較暖的湖泊與池塘淺水處，或水流緩慢的溪流。雄性會挖掘巢穴，並有護衛卵及幼魚之行為。強烈的領域行為，會攻擊侵入的魚類。
