田鱉最大可長到12釐米，常見的個體為7至9釐米，它是中國廣泛分佈的昆蟲。它頭部小，身體扁闊，生活在水中，呼吸管在腹部的末端．以水中的小魚小蟲為食．性兇猛。當負子蝽或田鱉咬到獵物時，它們會快速向獵物體內注射一種可以溶解組織的酶，然後吸食液化後的組織。
