廣斧螳螂成蟲長度約6cm，因為體型大、分布廣，所以在螳螂中算是比較常見的，也比較容易飼養，適合新手入門。廣斧螳體色一般是綠色，但偶爾也能見到褐色的。
螳螂的捕食方式屬於伏擊型，它們總是悄悄靠近獵物，或者潛伏在獵物可能光顧的地方，然後抓住合適時機，以驚人的速度出擊。所以平時我們看到它往往動作比較緩慢，而不是東奔西跑。用作觀察實驗也很適合。
