紅肚鉛筆體呈梭形，雌雄兩性色彩有差異。雌魚背部淺棕色，體軸中央有一道顯著的金線，下方並有一道黑線。雄魚背部棕紅色，成熟後愈加深厚成為醬紅色，體軸由一道顯著的黑線，腹鰭尖端為醒目的藍色。
