噴火燈又稱橘帆夢幻旗，體長約3釐米，側扁略呈菱形，是體色豔麗的小型燈魚類。噴火燈的顏色為通身的深橘色，肌肉透明可見骨骼，腹腔部分被反光物質包裹，但同樣覆蓋以紅色，視覺上呈現金色。噴火燈的雄魚在背鰭上有一個黑斑，自雌魚則不甚明顯。另外噴火燈有一個變異種，通身紅色消退，呈銅黃色，只有尾鰭還保度留紅色，稱為“焰尾噴火燈”，是非常難得的個體。
