黑瑪麗是卵胎生魚類中較難飼養的一個品種，在無日光照射的水族箱中很難飼養。性情溫和，可與其它性情溫和的魚類品種混養。喜弱鹼性（pH為7.4）硬水，在水溫為22～28℃的水中生活良好，廣鹽性，對鹽水有一定的適應能力。且對水溫的變化很敏感，不喜一次性全部更換水，應常部分換水。
