五間鯽體側有五條縱向的黑色粗條紋，其實尾柄還有一條不十分明顯的縱紋，所以有很多水族館稱其為六間。縱紋第一道通過眼睛、第三道起自背鰭基底。魚鰭大多有深淺不同的紅色，通常在鰭基部，尾鰭上和幼魚在這一特徵並不那麼明顯。
