黑裙魚屬脂鯉科，原產南美洲亞馬遜河流域、巴西、烏拉圭、玻利維亞及阿根廷等地。黑裙魚在自然界中長約6-8厘米，水族箱養殖的一般長約3-6厘米，體高，側扁，近似菱形。臀鰭寬大，脂鰭較小，胸鰭、腹鰭、尾鰭均為白色。
