猪仔魚形似羅非魚，但身體更寬闊鈍圓，頭大、嘴大，背鰭基部很長，自胸鰭上方背部直達尾鰭基部，鰭條前部是鋸齒狀短硬棘，後部軟鰭條較長，與臀鰭成對稱狀。 腹鰭胸比特，鰭端尖條形，尾鰭後緣圓形。 魚體的基色為黑色和黃、白色，上有不規則的高粱紅斑點，間雜紅色條紋斑塊，頗似一幅地圖，故又得名地圖魚。
