彩鱊體稍長，側扁，呈長橢圓形。頭小，頭長大於頭高。吻短，吻長短於眼徑。口小，端位，上頜末端位於眼下緣同一水平線。口角無須，或須為痕跡狀。眼中大，上側位，眼徑小於眼間距。鰓孔大。鰓蓋膜與峽部相連。喜棲於湖、溪近岸靜水水域，攝食浮游動物。
