黑魔鬼魚有攻擊性，喜歡夜行，全身漆黑如墨，遊姿靈巧，美妙，捕獵時速度極快。全身漆黑如墨，頭尖，尾鰭延長似棒狀，尾鰭有兩個白色環。靠體內的弱電流來感覺水流、障礙物和食物等，造型奇特。體形較為側扁，背部光滑呈弧線形，腹鰭和臀鰭相連，呈波浪狀直達尾部，似一條黑色花邊勾勒出魚的曲線圖。
