鬥魚的主要特徵是有一特別呼吸器官，稱之為“輔助器”，用來呼吸空氣，它能夠在水面吸一口氣送入輔助器裡，進行氣體交換。鬥魚體背櫛鱗，背鰭和臀鰭均延長，鰭棘部長于鰭條部，腹鰭第一鰭條延長成絲狀，它的身體為淺褐色，具10條左右藍色或綠色橫帶，眼至鰓蓋帶有2-3條暗色斜帶，鰓蓋後緣具一藍斑。它能棲息沼池、溝渠的污水中。
